The Kakamega Forest National Reserve is situated about 415km from the capital Nairobi via Nakuru through either Kisumu city or Kapsabet town. It is about 50km north of Kisumu city.

The national reserve sits on an area off 44km2. Kakamega National Reserve was established as a national forest reserve in 1985 and forms part of the larger Lake Victoria basin. Part of the reserve is the Kakamega Forest, which is the only remaining natural tropical forest of the Guineo-Congolian type.

The Kakamega forest boasts of some of the world’s oldest soft and hardwood trees. The natural beauty that it offers to the eye goes beyond just the forest. It keeps about 360 species of birds, 380 plant species, 400 butterfly species and 7 primates.
